{"id":3461,"date":"2024-12-25T08:14:06","date_gmt":"2024-12-25T08:14:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sabahkm.com\/jo\/?p=3461"},"modified":"2024-12-25T08:14:06","modified_gmt":"2024-12-25T08:14:06","slug":"sudans-worsening-famine-conflict-puts-millions-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sabahkm.com\/jo\/?p=3461","title":{"rendered":"Sudan\u2019s worsening famine: Conflict puts millions at risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Sudan is confronting a widening famine crisis, with widespread starvation, surging acute malnutrition and mass displacement exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation, a UN-backed food security assessment released on Tuesday has found.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More than 24.6 million people \u2013 half of Sudan\u2019s population \u2013 are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, according to the IPC initiative, which tracks extreme hunger globally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">IPC\u2019s Famine Review Committee (FRC) confirmed that famine (IPC phase 5) is present in at least five areas, including North Darfur\u2019s Zamzam camp and parts of the Western Nuba Mountains.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The crisis is projected to expand further, with five additional areas \u2013 North Darfur localities of Um Kadadah, Melit, El Fasher, At Tawisha, and Al Lait \u2013 expected to face famine between December 2024 and May 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Additionally, 17 other areas are at risk of famine, particularly those with significant influxes of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
